STEM Chair

The STEM Chair , a design by Moonler that won the DIA award ( DFA Design for Asia Awards – Merit Award 2025) , reflects a design concept that deeply questions the “value of materials” and “the chair manufacturing process.”

This project began with the idea that we should value “trees” more than just “wood” as an industrial material. We therefore revisited the natural structure of tree trunks and translated this into the shape of chair legs, inspired by the “trunk (stem)”.

The design is created by removing some of the wood surface while retaining the cylindrical structure, resulting in a distinct identity through simple geometric shapes. The joining of half-cylinder pieces creates a strong cross structure, reflecting structures we encounter in everyday life.

The design concept that led to winning the DIA award.

  • Questioning traditional furniture manufacturing processes.

  • Reduce the number of components while maintaining the structural strength.

  • Drawing inspiration from nature into contemporary geometric shapes.

  • Creating a balance between beauty, simplicity, and durability.

Receiving the DIA award (DFA Design for Asia Awards) – Merit Award 2025 is not only recognition of design, but also reflects the concept of responsible design, which truly values the origin of materials and manufacturing processes.

The STEM Chair is therefore more than just a chair; it's a dialogue between nature, structure, and contemporary design.
